Boston: Boston University Women's Council, 1929. No Edition Stated. Small 4to (10 1/4 x 7 1/8 inches; 260 x 180 mm), [32] pages, in stapled wrappers. *A souvenir program for a "Boston University Festival and Antique Treasures Exhibit and Sale" to raise money for a Woman's Building at Bay State Road at Chilmark Street. Sponsored by the Boston University Women's Council, the Festival and Exhibit took place from October 14-16, 1929, at Copley Plaza. *The program lists all the festivities, which included luncheons, afternoon teas, a fashion show, and evening entertainment, including a "Tavern Night," with prominent Boston-area women portraying "Ladies of the White House," and "Ladies Who Have Won Distinction in Art, Music, Literature, Politics, and Society," followed by a minuet, songs, a "lancers quadrille," and cake walks. *The festival also featured loans of "antique treasures" from local homes, as well as loans of the Commode Oliver Hazard Perry Collection and the General John Stark Collection. *The program includes numerous advertisements, three of which are illustrated by drawings of fashionable ladies (Bayburn Dry Cleaners, Mrs. Fowler's Lingerie Shop, and A.M. Hume Company for Baldwin pianos), along with ads for local banks, securities firms, antique shops, milliners, and a full-page ad for "The New Cord, A Front Drive Automobile." The program also includes a loose flyer advertising a Boston antiques exposition at the Hotel Statler in December. *It's a good thing this fundraiser for Boston University took place when it did rather than later. Shortly after the Festival, the stock market suffered a devastating crash, ushering in the Great Depression. *This program is rare. OCLC WorldCat shows no institutional holdings. Nor were there any in commerce as of October 20, 2018. *A fascinating look at the exuberant Boston social and cultural scene just days before the market crash and the onset of the Depression. RARE.
