Wolf Biermann: Poems and Ballads
London: Pluto Press Ltd., 1977.
A book of poems and ballads by Wolf Biermann (b. 1936), who was stripped of his East German citizenship while performing in West Germany in 1976.
The poems and ballads are in both German and English (translated from the German by Steve Gooch). The book begins with a letter that Biermann wrote to Stuart Hood, followed by "an appreciation" by Jack Zipes, and then the 22 poems and ballads, including musical scores of the ballads.
The book includes Biermann's most famous song, Ermutigung (Encouragement), in which he tells listeners not to lose hope. He dedicated the song to his friend Peter Huchel, a poet and editor who was under house arrest in East Germany.
