The Old Gang and The New Gang. Wyndham Lewis.

The Old Gang and The New Gang

London: Desmond Harmsworth, 1933. First Edition, First Printing. Small 8vo (7 1/2 inches / 192 mm tall), 62, [2] pages in publisher's original red-cloth binding, titles in black to spine. Small bookseller's ticket to front free end paper, contents slightly toned, page edges a bit soiled. The unclipped dust jacket is rubbed and lightly soiled with small nicks at both ends of the spine. Overall, a Very Good copy in the scarce red-cloth binding. Wyndham Lewis's treatise about the rise of a new "gang" of real and potential dictators (Mussolini, Hitler, Mosley, Trotsky), replacing the "old" gang of politicians. They're especially skillful, he argues, in appealing to youth. This book was published in an edition of 1,000 copies in January 1933, coincidentally the same month Hitler became chancellor of Germany. There were two variant bindings -- gray/black and red. The red binding, used in this copy, is much rarer. (Bradford Morrow and Bernard Lafourcade, A Bibliography of the Writings of Wyndham Lewis, 1978. A20). Item #1442
