New York: The Living Theatre, [1963]. First Edition. Single sheet flyer (10 1/2 inches / 266 mm tall), printed on white paper. Wrinkling and tiny nick to upper left corner, otherwise a Near Fine copy of this rare flyer. Never folded for mailing. Flyer announcing a benefit evening to raise money for LeRoi Jones [later Amiri Baraka] and his wife, Hettie, who were recovering from serious illnesses. According to the flyer: "During all this time neither has been able to work, and their means are exhausted. This benefit has been arranged so that the proceeds may tide them over until such time as they are well enough to resume work." Tickets were $1.50 for general admission and $5 and $10 for sponsors. The benefit took place at the Living Theatre, 530 6th Avenue, and featured readings, lectures, and music. Participants included Frank O'Hara, Larry Rivers, Joel Oppenheimer, Paul Blackburn, Anita Ellis, Gaby Rodgers, Jack Richardson, Cecil Taylor & Co., and Don Cherry & Brass Ensemble.
