ABC of Reading

New Haven: Yale University Press, 1934. First American Edition, 1st Printing. 8vo (8 1/14 inches / 210 mm tall), in green cloth boards, lettering to spine in black, with a green dust jacket printed in red and black. Sunning to top edges of boards, mild offsetting to end papers, fore edge foxed, internally clean and bright. The dust jacket has some chips and nicks along the edges, spine darkened, sunning to extremities, soiling to panels, signs of dampstaining. A Very Good copy overall. Ezra Pound's wonderfully entertaining textbook, which is anything but academic. He suggests words have a certain music and he goes after writers who don't meet his standards: "Wordsworth got rid of a lot of trimmings, but there are vast stretches of deadness in his writing. Artists are the antennae of the race. Wordsworth vibrates to a very limited range of stimuli, and he was not conscious of the full problem of writing." (Page 59) One of only 1,016 copies printed, a much smaller print run than the earlier U.K. edition. Gallup A35.b. SCARCE in dust jacket. Item #1476
