INSCRIBED by Karel Appel on the inside front cover: "Voor / Gert-Jan / Appel." The recipient was the Dutch art collector Gert-Jan Hemmink.
Booklet presenting paintings by Dutch artist Karel Appel (1921-2006), one of the giants of the Cobra art movement. With a short introduction in French by Belgian artist Christian Dotremont, who was also associated with Cobra. The cover illustration, an original lithograph, is in color, the works inside in black-and-white.
In 1950, the publisher issued a set of 15 volumes focusing on Cobra artists, such as Alechinsky, Corneille, Heerup, Constant, etc. with separate sets in French and Danish. Our copy is from the French edition, #3 in the Bibliotheque de Cobra series edited by Danish artist Asger Jorn.
OCLC lists this booklet under numerous accession numbers. Most institutional holdings are in Europe, although a few are in the U.S. and Canada: Yale, Harvard, the Frick, and Alberta.
Single copies are extremely scarce to the market, whether signed or unsigned. RARE SIGNED.
