Karel Appel, Corneille, Constant Nieuwenhuijs

Amsterdam: Kunsthandel Santee Landweer N.V., 1948. First Edition, First Printing. Single sheet folded once to create an oblong invitation measuring 5 1/2 x 5 3/4 inches (115 x 147 mm) when folded. Several creases as well as edge wear. A Very Good copy of a fragile piece of ephemera printed on flimsy paper. *Rare announcement for the first joint exhibition by Karel Appel, Corneille, and Constant Nieuwenhuijs at the Santee Landweer gallery in Amsterdam, February 14-March 4, 1948. The poet and businessman Louis Tiessen gave the opening speech, "a fiery defence of their work and ideas and an attempt to soften the public's dismissive attitude." (Willemijn Stokvis, "COBRA: The History of a European Avant-Garde Movement, 1948-1951," page 97). *The exhibition opened nine months before the official formation of COBRA in a Paris cafe in November 1948. And the present invitation, with its striking design, foreshadows COBRA's break with classical painting. *Rare, with no copies in commerce as of August 22, 2018. OCLC WorldCat shows a single institutional holding, at the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam. Item #1541
