A profusely illustrated guide in English to Moscow's many theatres: academic theatres, "Theatres Created by the Great October Revolution," national theatres; theatres for children; collective-farm theatres; and new theatres under construction. The text makes clear that theatre is expected to serve the goals of the state: "The Soviet theatre does not cut itself off from life; by assisting to remold life it plays a most important part in the education of the New Socialist Man." The book presents gorgeous sepia-toned photographs of productions, actors, and directors. Although the book is widely held by institutions, there were no other copies in commerce as of August 27, 2019. SCARCE. Item #2039

CONDITION: Wear and soiling to the orange wrappers, with tears and loss to the spine. Sticker to lower wrapper. Some pages lightly creased, but otherwise clean and unmarked. A Very Good copy.
