A Christian View of Socialism. G. H. Strobell.

A Christian View of Socialism

Chicago: Charles H. Kerr & Company, ca. 1905-1909. 24mo (5 3/4 x 3 1/2 inches; 145 x 89 mm), 32 pages, in stapled wrappers. A scarce contribution to the Christian Socialist movement of the early 20th century. "For the first time in the history of the world there is an intelligent and systematized movement toward the conscious organization of a just society. It is the Socialist movement now on its way to a speedy triumph in all civilized nations." (Page 10). The pamphlet contains no publication date. But we estimate ca. 1905-1909, based on an advertisement in the September 1909 edition of the International Socialist Review. The pamphlet is listed as one of the publications comprising the "Pocket Library of Socialism" published by Charles H. Kerr & Company. Moreover, the pamphlet is apparently based on an address that Strobell first delivered to the Presbyterian Ministers Association in 1905, according to Robert H. Craig, Religion and Radical Politics: An Alternative Christian Tradition in the United States. (Temple University Press, 1992, page 264, footnote 44). This edition should not be confused with a revised edition that was issued in 1917 by Appeal to Reason, a left-wing newspaper published in Girard, Kansas. OCLC shows institutional holdings of this pamphlet at the University of California Davis, Indiana State, Oberlin, National Library of Australia, and the University of Toronto. (December 2019).
