Baumeister (1889-1955) had long been interested in the ancient art and culture of the Near East. Indeed, according to Baumeister biographer and friend Will Grohmann, Baumeister knew the epic by heart. (See "Gilgamesh in Modern Art," by Brigitte Pedde, in F. Pedde and N. Shelley (eds.), Assyromania and More: In Memory of Samuel M. Paley, marru 4 (2018), pages 449-458.)
The catalogue features beautiful original screen prints by Baumeister on the upper wrapper and frontispiece. Text entirely in German. Item #2202
