Holyoke, Massachusetts: The Elizabeth Towne Co., Inc., 1924. 12mo (7 1/8 x 4 3/4 inches; 185 x 120 mm), 55 pages, in green printed wrappers. A guide for young women on "how to make your conversation pleasing and attractive," and "how to radiate magnetism and attract success."The book quickly gets to the point of what this is all about: "First of all girls seek the company of young men in the hope of meeting the right one and some day get married--men seek the company of girls for the same reason." (Page 12). There follows advice on how a young woman should talk with her "escort" when going out at night. There's plenty more in this vein but there's also an emphasis on good manners, listening to people, focusing on the person you're with and not looking around the room, showing self-confidence at work, etc.The title page shows the publisher as The Elizabeth Towne Co., of Holyoke, Massachusetts, a publisher of self-help books. But also mentioned on the title page is L.N. Fowler & Co., Ludgate Circus, London, a publisher of books on personality and character analysis. OCLC shows only four institutional holdings: Cambridge University, British Library, University of Oxford, and Trinity College Dublin. No others in commerce as of July 5, 2020.An oddly fascinating look at what was probably a conventional view of etiquette and manners in 1924. SCARCE. Item #2238
