London and Rome: Anthony d'Offay and Gian Enzo Sperone, 1981. First Edition, First Printing.
Folio (13 1/8 x 10 1/8 inches; 333 x 262 mm), illustrated leaves, front and rear boards fold out to each create illustrated panels, in a green cloth binding.
SIGNED by Francesco Clemente on the colophon. A sumptuous artist's book printed on heavy handmade paper featuring Clemente's sometimes-erotic illustrations. The book accompanied an exhibition in London of Clemente's miniature paintings, which he made in India with the assistance of young local artists and which reflected his interest in Hindu spirituality.
The book features 6 illustrations in color (including the colophon) printed directly on the page and 8 illustrations in color on separate sheets mounted on the leaves. The front and rear boards are in color. Each folds out to reveal another illustration in color and 2 in black-and-white.
Bonus: Laid in is a painted announcement -- actually, a work of art itself -- for Clemente's 1983 show at Sperone Westwater and Mary Boone in New York. That was a very important joint exhibition that helped to bring Clemente to the attention of collectors in the United States.
CONDITION: Some rubbing and abrasion to the boards. A Near Fine copy of a beautiful artist's book signed by Francesco Clemente. Item #2522
