[African-American] [Music] [Performing Arts] Songs of the American Negro [Cover title]

New York: Carl Fischer, Inc., 1934 [?].

Small Quarto (9 1/8 x 6 inches; 231 x 150 mm), [16] pages, including the covers, in stapled, illustrated wrappers (soft cover).

Rare catalogue of sheet music sold by the famous New York publisher Carl Fischer, featuring works by both Black and White composers. The catalogue shows the first few staves of individual songs by the Black composers Hall Johnson, Clarence Cameron White, and John W. Work. White composers are represented by Robert MacGimsey and Avery Robinson. The center spread highlights musical collections by Hall Johnson, Maud Cuney Hare, and John J. Niles.

"Songs of the American Negro" does not carry a publication date, but we estimate ca. 1934, the copyright date of several songs.

This catalogue is rare. We have been unable to find any institutional holdings in OCLC under this title and publisher (although there are a couple of works with the same or similar names by different publishers). No others in commerce (November 2022). RARE.

CONDITION: Moderate toning and creasing to the pages, split at bottom of the spine, internally clean and unmarked. About Very Good overall. Item #2627
