Sadness Transformed: 2.28 Commemorative Exhibition

[Taipei Fine Arts Museum]

Taipei: Taipei Fine Arts Museum, 1997.

Scarce brochure issued for a 50th anniversary exhibition commemorating the "2.28 Incident." In 1947, the Kuomintang authorities in Taiwan violently suppressed an anti-government uprising, killing thousands of citizens.

The exhibition featured works from 43 artists and was "centered on hopes for peace," and was meant to "transform grief and promote harmony in society and between ethnic groups, and to focus on the bright side of life." Besides the exhibition, activities included lectures, gallery talks, and guided tours by artists, victims, and relatives.

This publication serves as an overview of the exhibition and should not be confused with a much longer catalogue that was published at the time. There are numerous illustrations in color and practically all text is in Chinese. Scarce in commerce and in institutional holdings.
