Respect for Acting
New York: Macmillan Publishing Co., Inc., 1973. First Edition, First Printing.
INSCRIBED by the acclaimed actress Uta Hagen on the front free end paper: "For Bob and Jane Emerson / with my / very / best wishes / Uta Hagen / Oct. 30th, 1974." The Emersons managed The Drama Book Shop in New York for many years. A nice association.
Also laid in is a typed letter, dated Jan. 30, 1991, from Uta Hagen to Jane Emerson, politely declining to advertise in a Yale Drama program honoring HB Studio's founder, Herbert Berghof.
Hagen (1919-2004) joined the faculty of HB Studio in 1947 and married Berghof in 1957. She was a well-regarded acting teacher; some of her students included Robert De Niro, Faye Dunaway, Gene Hackman, Whoopi Goldberg, Jack Lemmon, Jason Robards, Fritz Weaver, and many others.
In this book, Hagen deals with the art of acting and how actors can identify with the character they're playing. She also offers exercises for actors and discusses ethical and moral issues that arise in acting. Haskel Frankel, the drama critic of the National Observer, assisted Hagen in writing the book.
Inscribed copies are scarce to the market. A terrific look at the acting profession by an acclaimed actress and teacher.
