Jean Anouilh's comedy about the artificial manners and wasted lives of a French count and his fellow aristocrats who amuse themselves by rehearsing a play in the count's castle.

This is an English translation of La Répétition ou l'amour puni, one of Anouilh's Pièces Brillantes. The play was first produced in Paris in 1950 and in London as The Rehearsal in 1961.

The London production opened at the Globe Theatre on April 6, 1961. The great Maggie Smith played the role of Lucile, a poor young nursemaid that the count invited to appear in the play. Translation by Pamela Hansford Johnson and Kitty Black.
