1945 [Soviet Calendar Book]

Moscow: Foreign Languages Publishing House, 1944. First Edition. A Soviet calendar book for 1945--in English. A fascinating and rare insight into the face that Russia wished to present to the English-speaking world near the end of World War II. Profusely illustrated, the book begins with full-page color photos of Comrades Lenin and Stalin, along with numerous patriotic exhortations by Stalin. Each week of the year gets its own page, with photos and articles on various aspects of the Soviet Union, such as culture, history, science, industry and geography. Octavo, unpaginated. Navy blue cloth over stiff boards. It opens like a book, but the pages are bound at the top edge of the rear cover so that they flip up like the pages of a note pad. The front cover has a blind-stamped illustration of a Kremlin clock tower. Superimposed over the lower edge of this illustration is "1945" in red, blind-stamped numbers. Spine and covers are slightly aged, soiled and edge-worn. Spine ends and corners are bumped, worn and frayed. Interior is very slightly aged, but clean, crisp and tight. First page is a quote from Stalin in red lettering: "The spirit of the great Lenin and his victorious banner now inspire us in this patriotic war." Above this is an ink inscription, in English, to "Group Capt. Anderson" from Lt. Colonel Khrolenz (?) of the USSR Naval Air Forces, dated "Washington, D.C. 29.10.45." A fascinating, unusual item.
